Brunei Schools Get Awareness
Videos On Waste Disposal
By Ubaidillah Masli
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Videos on waste management were distributed to five
heads of schools to promote environmental awareness among students
on Thursday.
"We are taking a step further with
the distribution of this video presentation to where we believe it
matters (to) the students, the schools (and) the Bruneian
community," said Patrick Bonneville, the French ambassador to
Brunei.
The French embassy, in cooperation
with the French-Brunei Business Association (FBBA), hopes to raise
awareness among school students by giving out copies of the video
which was presented during the 'World Water and Waste Management'
forum last February.
The video clip showcased the
environmental problems which have arisen around Kampong Ayer and
Gadong due to the improper disposal of rubbish by the public.
Apart from being an eyesore, the
rubbish accumulated in these areas may also damage the delicate
mini-ecosystems found around the capital. They also raise health and
safety concerns, through the blockage of sewer systems which can
result in disastrous flash floods. The video also presented the
cleaner side of Brunei, where projects have been undertaken to rid
the country of improperly disposed waste.
The representatives of schools
which saw the video during the forum, had requested for copies of it
to be shown to their students. With the approval from the Ministry
of Development, the videos were given by Patrick Bonneville and FBBA
president, Pierre Imhof to principals of St Andrew, St George,
Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, Chung Hwa Middle School
and the director of International School Brunei.
It was hoped that the video would
raise awareness among the students of these schools so that they
would be inspired to participate in community service projects,
which will ultimately result in an ecoconscious Brunei.
The FBBA and the embassy reminded
people to throw their rubbish away in appropriate rubbish bins. "It
is our responsibility to keep Brunei clean and green," said Tan
Cheng Voon an official from the embassy's economic department.
The presentation ceremony took
place at the French Embassy in the capital on Thursday. The Director
of Environment, Parks and Redreation of the Ministry of Development,
Hj Mohd Zakaria Hj Sarudin was also present at the ceremony. -- Courtesy of
