Brunei’s Two Shots In Kayak
Challenge

Begawan - Brunei will be represented by two Kayak teams in
the Labuan-Brunei Extreme Kayak Challenge held in conjunction with
the Malaysia Water Festival 2008 and Labuan International Sea
Challenge 2008.
This was disclosed at a press
conference held yesterday at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and
Sports. Present at the conference were Director of Youth and Sports,
Awg Hj Matassim Hj Jibah, General Manager of Labuan Tourism Action
Council, Siti Maznah Hj Damit, several senior officers from the
Department of Youth and Sports as well as representatives from the
organisers and the Brunei National Kayak Association.
Apart from Brunei and teams from
the West and East Malaysia, several teams from abroad will also be
participating in the challenge which is offering RM10,000 for the
first prize and RM5,000 and RM,4000 for second and third place
respectively along with a medal, trophy and certificate.
Cash prizes and medal trophy and
certificates will also be each awarded to the fourth to tenth
winners in the extreme challenge. Among the other teams involved in
the challenge that is scheduled to take place on April 20 and 21 are
a team from Britain, four teams from Singapore as well as the
Philippines. Registration for the challenge is open until April 17.
According to Siti Maznah, the
challenge will begin on April 20 starting from Labuan to Brunei and
back to Labuan on April 21. The journey altogether, total up to over
90 kilometres. Prior to the challenge, teams will have to undergo a
skill test in order to be eligible to take part in the challenge.
She further noted that the
Department of Youth and Sports are also cooperating with the
organisers and getting more teams from the sultanate to participate.
Besides the challenge, Brunei
Darussalam will also be participating in the Cross Channel Swinuning
Challenge and deep sea fishing tournament. Currently, there are 10
participants from Brunei Darussalam who have registered to
participate in the swimming challenge.
The Swimming challenge will take
place on the closing day of the week long festival where it will
cover over five kilometres route to and from Labuan to Papan Island
and back to Labuan. Other sea sports events that will also be taking
place are Boat Tug-of-War, Round Island Kayak Challenge and Labuan
