'Don't get swayed by twisted view
on Islam'
By Nasroul Hizam
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Do not be swayed by twisted perceptions and
interpretations by people who seek to raise controversy and create
feelings of unease worldwide, Imams yesterday cautioned Muslims
here.
The call was made in response to
the short film titled 'Fitna', which caused an uproar among Muslim
communities worldwide when it was released recently on the Internet.
Imams nationwide slammed the film's
portrayal of Islam as a religion of violence that, with the al-Quran
as a tool, encourages its followers to be aggressive and become
"extremists". The film has created chaos and confusion in the world
through the blatant insult and utter inconsideration towards Islam.
They said the irresponsible act
gave birth to nothing but hatred, born from the abuse of the right
to the freedom of speech. They also highlighted that the right does
not mean that a person is able to freely insult another's religion
or race.
They clarified that Islam is a
religion that promotes peace and prosperity. Even the spreading of
Islam by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was done through
courtesy and good relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims
alike.
Imams also stressed that Islam is a religion filled with pure
values and kindness. Muslims are normally forbidden from causing
hurt or killing others.
Even committing suicide is strongly
against religion. In times of war, Muslims are warned against
attacking women, children, the elderly, those who are sick, those
who are not participating, in the war as well as prisoners. In
addition, the destruction of property, crops and farm animals is
also heavily frowned upon.
Muslims were advised to not be
swayed by the effects of the short film and prove that Islam is
indeed not as the film pictured it to be.
The importance of maintaining the
image that Islam practices noble characteristics such as patience,
consideration, self control and fairness instead of being violent,
cruel and destructive, was also stressed. -- Courtesy of
