Clash Of Brunei Rugby Giants
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Royal Brunei Armed Forces will be facing their
old rivals the Royal Brunei Yacht Club in the first game of the
Brunei Rugby Football- Union Inter-Club Rugby Tournament on Saturday
at Berakas Camp.
The soldiers, beaten twice in the
same tournament last year by Royal Brunei Yacht Club, are hoping to
turn the tables this time around.
According to Major Sopian bin
MuhammadYassin, team manager of Royal Brunei Armed Forces: "We have
been training since January and are looking forward for a tough game
against the Royal Brunei Yacht Club."
Major Sopian who is also the
VicePresident of BRFU said last year we finished fifth and we hoped
to do better this year.
"Playing against the most
experienced team in the tournament, we are expecting a close game.
However we will be relying on our fitness to come out top." Roual
Brunei Armed Forces coach Shafeek Kamalie, a former U-20 national
coach with vast experience, hoped to produce a winning team with
some 10-new players in the squad.
Meanwhile, Royal Brunei Yacht Club,
last year's semifinalists, are confident of beating the army boys
again.
SukorAshak, the vice-captain of
RBYC said: "With over two months of practice and four U-20 national
players in the squad, we are better prepared this year."
But Sukor pointed out that the army
boys have a strong forward line and under a former national coach
... it will be a tough game.
Beside the Royal Brunei Armed
Forces and Royal Brunei Yacht Club, another four teams are also in
the fray for the three-feet tall gigantic Darussalam Cup and the Dr
Haji Kamaruddin Cup.
The teams are defending champions
KB Pythons, the last year finalist Royal Brunei Police, Bandar
Blacks and newcomer the Knights.
The first championship will be a
round robin league championship where the winner will take home the
Dr Hj Kamaruddin Cup while the Darussalam Cup will be awarded to the
playoff winner of the top four teams.
