Government Bans Mozzarella From Italy

Bandar Seri Begawan - The government is banning Italian-made mozzarella even as it assured the public that the cheese made from buffalo milk is not available for sale in Brunei Darussalam, following news reports that the cheese contains cancer-causing dioxin.

Based on government records, the Ministry of Health's Health Services Department said mozzarella cheese was not found in the local market, after Italy recalled the product that was potentially contaminated with dioxin.

The Health ministry assured the public that mozzarella cheese in Brunei are imported from Australia and Denmark.

But importers and businesses have been advised to avoid selling Italian-made cheese for the time being.

The ministry said merchants found preparing, selling or importing food products that are potentially harmful would be jailed or face other sanctions. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
