BIC Holds Public Lecture On
Nanoparticles
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Brunei Darussalam Institute of Chemistry (BIC)
recently held a public lecture, entitled 'Nanoparticles', at the
Central Lecture Theatre, UBD. On hand to deliver the talk was
Associate Professor Dr DTB Tennakoon of the Chemistry Department,
UBD.
The lecture was pare of the
institute's aim to instil knowledge of the science-of Chemistry to
the people of Brunei.
Nanoparticles
are particles with at least one dimension less than one to 100nm. A
diverse array of nanoparticles and their effects are all around us.
The dust and smog in the atmosphere, the droplets of water forming
the clouds, colloidal particles in milk, are all nanoparticles.
The relatively recent rediscovery
of the unique properties of these small particles has led to the
search for more and better such materials, and this is one of the
fastest growing areas of current scientific research.
The talk discussed the interesting
properties shown by nanoparticles such as light scattering, coloured
fluorescence in metal and semiconductor nanoparticles, novel
electrical and magnetic properties, extremely high surface areas and
unusual mechanical strength. The talk also dealt with the
current and potential applications of these particles, leading to
the technology based on them, nanotechnology. It concluded with a
consideration of the potential for novel technologies based on
nanoparticles. -- Courtesy of Borneo
