Brunei Shell Refinery Opens New
Guardhouse To Boost Security
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - In line with its commitment for an improved
standard of working environment in carrying out security
responsibilities, Brunei Shell Refinery yesterday marked the
official opening of the new security guardhouse.
Strategically located at the
refinery main entrance, the new guardhouse is aimed at protecting
the plant and managing the movement of vehicles and people entering
and exiting the plant. The new security guardhouse was officially
opened by the Assistant Commanding Officer of Police Belait District
DSP Awang Lim Tim Choi.
Refinery Manager Hj Yahya Mohamad,
in his welcoming remarks, stated that for the past 24 years of
operation, the security of the refinery plant has been looked after
by the Royal Brunei Police Force — Auxiliary Police Unit (APO) and
the service will remain operational for many years to come.
He highlighted that since the
responsibility of ensuring the security of the plant is a joint
responsibility, the opening of the new security office is a
testimony to the refinery's commitment in undertaking a joint
responsibility for the safety and security of the plant. The new
guardhouse is to accommodate full-time security officers who work
four shifts in 12-hour rotations.
As part of the initiatives of the
refinery in ensuring the effective security management, apart from
the construction of the new security guardhouse which started in
November 2007, a few projects have been implemented, namely, the
upgrading of the CCTV system and the refinery fencing project.
The building is fully operational
since early January 2008 and the Refinery Manager also cited its
fair share of security incidents where cables and other valuable
items were found missing from the engineering fabrication yard and a
few years back when boys were discovered running within the confines
of the refinery to pursue a fallen kite.
Therefore with the new projects
coupled with the duties carried out by the new refinery security
outfit with the support from the Royal Brunei Police Force, the
Refinery Manager expressed the hope that such occurrences or other
security shortfalls can be better addressed.
Hj Yahya then led the guest of
honour on a tour of the new security guardhouse and view a
mini-exhibition. -- Courtesy of Borneo
