Mozzarella Cheese Sold In Brunei
Not From Italy: MoH
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Mozzarella cheese from Italy, suspected to be
tainted with dioxin, is not imported to Brunei, the Ministry of
Health assured the public.
The confirmation was made following
the recall of the tainted Mozzarella cheese by Italy's Ministry of
Health. Dioxin can cause cancer.
Based on the food import
registration record of the Quality Control and Food Safety Division
of Environmental Health Services of Health Services Department, the
product is not imported to the country. Cheese products bearing
similar names come from Denmark and Australia.
But as a precautionary step, the
ministry said that it will continue to monitor to ensure that the
tainted product is not available in the local market or imported to
the country.
The ministry also advised importers
and retailers not to import milk products including cheese from
Italy for the time being.
Customers who possess the product
are advised not to consume but destroy it. The ministry said the act
of providing, selling or importing food that can jeopardise one's
health is an offence that carries five years' imprisonment or fine
or both, if found guilty, under Section 9 (1) (i) of the Public
Health Act (Food), Chapter 182.
For inquiries, the public can call
