Books Trump Net For Research,
Casual Reading
By Syazwan Sadikin
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Books are still preferred as the source of
reference and for casual readings for some in Brunei in comparison
with getting them from the Internet.
A teacher from Sayyidina Hussain
Secondary School said "that books have mobility and easy access".
He said that with the Internet
there was the hassle of staying connected and he has to carry a
laptop wherever he went.
"Plus, the resources found on the
Internet are quite irrelevant to certain subject matter," said the
teacher, who wished to remain unnamed, and pointed out that popular
websites such as www.wikipedia.com, a main source of reference for
students "is just basic reading at most".
"I prefer books because you can
keep it," said Daryl On, a customer at Reader's Haven, adding that
the computer screen is often too bright and irritates his eyes.
However, according to a sale
representative from one of the bookstores in the country, there is a
growing concern over the fact that people are using the Internet
more.
"Everything that is available on
print can easily be found on the Internet, said the Best Eastern
sales representative.
She said fewer customers are buying
books nowadays due to the frequent use of the Internet for obtaining
information.
Talking about the availability of
books in Brunei, she pointed out that there is a lack of books with
current titles.
"Demands on certain books depend on
the customers needs," said the Best Eastern sales representative.
However, she added, the bookstore is interested in bringing in books
that cater to adults' reading needs.
Another bookstore, Reader's Haven,
is also gradually expanding its selection of graphic novels and
comics, while also focusing on teenage and young adults.
