Family Plagued By Flooding
Problems
By Za'im Zaini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Every time it pours, a family in Kg Jerudong
shudders. For the last seven years, heavy downpours would mean the
family would have to worry about their home being flooded and having
to dry out the drenched furniture the following day.
"It is very inconvenient for us,"
said the head of the family, who is in her fifties.
"In the past, one of my daughters
had to tie the knot at a hotel at the very last minute as our house
was inundated with water," she said.
Over the years, the losses have run
up to an estimated $30,000, with the flood waters damaging
everything from carpets to electrical appliances, sometimes leaving
the house under two feet of water.
The last straw was when her
7-year-old grandson fell after slipping on a wet floor following a
flood.
She cited the reason for the
flooding to be the result of a river behind the house being diverted
for construction works in the past.
However, the works have since been
complete and she is now requesting that the authorities level the
land to minimise the chances of flash flooding in the area.
While the family had been
approached on the issue in the past, she said, however, nothing had
yet been done to rectify the problem.
The situation worsened with the
construction of a nearby drain, which has been sealed off by a
workshop. -- Courtesy of Borneo
