Pengkalan Si-Jampang
By Sham

Bandar Seri Begawan - One of the places in Brunei which is getting more and more famous among the fishing enthusiasts is Pengkaian Si-.Iampang. This place is located in Sungai Besar, dalan Kota Batu, barely 20 minutes away from the capital. With connecting wooden bridges and a shelter to rest, it's a safe and perfect haven for active anglers.

Upon seeing the increasing number of visitors coming to this place, an effort to upgrade the area is being carried out at the moment. In addition to the reasonably new shelter and bridges built on the water that can clearly withstand years of consistent bashing from the waves and rain, relevant authorities have started constructions of new concrete gazebos and benches in the open space replacing the old wooden ones which are now dilapidated. Upon completion, visitors can fully utilise the new facilities. Years ago, this place was mainly used and also served as a pick-up point for residents who live in Kampung Pulau BaruBaru just across the river. For the same reason, it was also used by the residents of Kg Menunggol.

However, now that Kampung BaruBaru virtually has no residents and that people in Kg Menunggoi prefer to access their village from Bandar Seri Begawan, this area is at present a favourite spot for anglers and has become a getaway for visitors.

One important factor in ensuring that this place can last -longer is to properly maintain it.

Therefore, frequent visitors, especially enthusiastic anglers, are advised to keep the place clean and proper. Since no lighting is available in the area, the place is very dark during night time. Evidence of people using candles as their source of light is quite clear with traces of wax seen just below the roof of each shed. Not only is this an eyesore, it can also be hazardous.

Perhaps the relevant authorities can take a look into this matter and provide some a fighting where it is deemed necessary.

Meanwhile, as the building of these concrete gazebos and benches is still under construction, frequent visitors are advised to stay clear from the construction area in order to avoid any unwanted incidents as well as for their own safety. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
