Health Ministry To Issue Statement
On Tainted Cheese
By Ben Ng
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei Darussalam will most likely be immune to the
freezing of Italian mozzarella cheese sales in neighbouring
Singapore after reports of a recall due to it being potentially
contaminated with cancer-causing dioxins.
The Ministry of Health has
acknowledged the concerns and told the Bulletin that it will be
issuing an official statement to the public with regards to the
matter, an official said yesterday.
Most of the cheese available in the
Brunei market, the official said, is imported from Australia, so
concerns should not be so widespread.
"The Food Safety and Quality
Control under the Ministry are looking into it, and once they have
all the information needed, they will come to a decision," said a
spokesperson from the Ministry of Health in Brunei Darussalam.
Singapore on Sunday stopped sales
of all Italian mozzarella cheese made from buffalo milk following
orders from Italy to recall the product that was potentially
contaminated with, cancer-causing dioxins.
Reuters quoted Singapore's Agri-Food
and Veterinary Authority (AVA) as saying that it had "stopped all
sales of the cheese pending laboratory tests as a precautionary
measure".
The last import of Italian buffalo
mozzarella cheese into Singapore was on January 6, Reuters quoted
the AVA as saying, but due to limited information it was unclear if
the imported cheese was contaminated.
Italy's Health Ministry said on
Friday it was withdrawing products from 25 companies in the Campania
region, where Italy's best buffalo mozzarella is produced.
