Asean Working Groups Meet On Livestock

Bandar Seri Begawan - The 15th Meeting of the Asean Sectoral Working Group on Livestock (ASWGL) was declared open by the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Pg Hjh Mariana bte Pengiran Dipa Negara Laila Diraja Pg Hj Abdul Momin.

The meeting, which runs from April 26-28, is being held at the Purple Jade, The Centrepoint, Gadong.

The Asean Sectoral Working Group on Livestock is a working group under the Asean Ministers for Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF). The meeting is held annually and its chair is rotated among the Asean member countries. This year the government of Brunei Darussalam has the honour of hosting the 15th ASWGL. Items on the agenda include an update on the progress of the cooperation programmes among Asean member countries for the regulation of products and utilisation of animal vaccines, promotion of international trade in livestock and livestock products and the strengthening of animal disease control programmes.

Other items include animal health and production information systems for Asean, progress on implementation of Asean Free Trade Agreement, joint Asean position and approach on regional and international livestock issues and issues of veterinary drug residue in food.

The expected outcomes of the 151' ASWGL are the development of Asean Standards by the three sub-groups in the meeting, namely the "Asean Standards Requirement for live salmonella galhnarum vaccine and inactivated E.coh vaccine for poultry" by the Animal Vaccine sub-working group, "Asean Bio-security Management Manual for poultry farming, boiler and meat type duck" by the Livestock Establishment sub-group and "Asean Criteria for Accreditation of meatprocessing and milkprocessing plants'. by the Livestock Products Establishment sub-group.

The 15th ASWGL was attended by veterinary officials’ fromAsean member countries Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Relevant representatives from the Asean Secretariat, Food and AgricultureOrganisation (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (014 AUSAID as well as the Southeast Asia Food and Mouth Regional Coordinating Unit (SEAFMD RCU) were also invited to join the meeting. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
