Teachers Urged To Master ICT
By Za'im Zaini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - "Teachers need to master ICT," said Pengiran Dato
Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad, the Deputy Minister of Education, who
was the guest of honour at the closing ceremony of the Teachers
Induction Course 2007 yesterday at UBD.
He called for "a study to be
conducted by any suitable department at the Ministry of Education to
identify which teachers are able or not to use ICT in teaching so
that we know exactly the strengths and weaknesses of the teachers,
and what we should do to solve the problem".
He said, "previously, the image of
teaching went down and was less appreciated up to a point where the
profession is the last choice for youths who enter the working
world. Now the situation has changed because the interest in
teaching has risen. What is hoped here is that students who have a
successful/good qualification in upper secondary will choose
teaching as their main and first choice."
"Teachers should not only see the
benefits from a material aspect. If there is no spirit of patriotism
in the hearts of the teachers, I believe the results will be
disappointing."
"Teachers are the key to a
student's success, the success of a school, the success of the
ministry and the success of the country overall. If teachers are of
a high quality, the results of the product will be of high quality,
and vice versa.
"Every teacher has to improve his
or her own qualities from time to time. They already have the
basics. What is left is for them to be appreciative and more able in
their roles and responsibilities as a teacher.
"Having knowledge itself is not
enough. A teacher needs to know the methods of delivering knowledge
to the students more easily with the latest techniques, equipment
and methodology."
Some 453 people participated in the
two-day induction course which was aimed at assisting new teachers
to be prepared for the tasks and responsibilities assigned to them
at school as well as helping them to be more concerned towards their
needs in developing their profession, especially in improving their
skills and knowledge.
The course also provided relevant
information through speeches, briefings and workshops that were
specially planned for the needs of the teachers.
The guest of honour also presented
certificates to the course participant representatives.
Md
Maz En4e Bin Mohiddin, a 26year-old participant, said "the course
was a worthwhile experience and helpful in many aspects, especially
the speeches".
"They also gave us notes to refer
to in the future. This course should be continued in the future" he
said.-- Courtesy of Borneo
