Biology Competition
By Azaraimy HH
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The High Commission of Canada in Brunei will sponsor
the 12th National Biology Competition in collaboration with the
University of Toronto, Canada and local participating schools, a high
commission press release stated.
This competition challenges talented
high school and college students, and nurtures their pursuits of
excellence as well as assisting them to become the creators,
inventors, scientists and leaders of the 21st century.
A total of 6,319 entries were
received last year from 453 schools where 439 of them were from
Canada, eight from Brunei Darussalam, two from Hong Kong, and one each
from California, Mainland China, Malaysia, and Spain.
Over 53,000 students have
participated in the competition since 1995.
In Brunei, 193 students from seven
different schools are participating in this year's competition.
The competition exam questions will
cover material that senior high school biology students are likely to
have come across in their studies. The content of the exam will
reflect the similarities in the secondary school biology curricula
internationally.
It contains: general biochemistry,
cell structure and processes, cell metobolism, genetics, evolution,
biological diversity, plant structure and function, vertebrate
structure and function, ecology, and interesting biological topics in
the news.
This competition provides students
with an opportunity to test their knowledge and understanding of
biology. In the press release, the Canada High Commission said all
secondary school students are welcome to participate, and encourage
those who are not in their senior year to enter, as students may write
the exam more than once.
Top students will receive
certificates designating them as National Biology Scholars and are
eligible to receive cash prizes.
The top 15 students to register in
Arts and Science programmes at the University of Toronto will be
awarded admission scholarships valued at C$5,000 each.
The top five schools will each
receive a Certificate of Excellence.
The Canada High Commission said they
are delighted with the participation of high school students from
Brunei. As such competition builds bridges of international
understanding and advancement among future leaders in science and
technology, with exchange of ideas and knowledge transcends all
barriers of nationality, race and religion.
The participating schools include
Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan, Maktab Duli Pg
MudaAl-Muhtadee Billah, SK Arab Laki-laki Hassanal Bolkiah, Jerudong
International School, Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Ali, Sekolah Menengah
Sayyidina Othman, Tutong, and 'Pusat Tingkatan Enam Berakas - PTEB.
