Asean Delegates Attend 2nd Task
Force Meeting On Tsunami Early Warning Systems

Begawan - Representatives from Asean member countries including
Brunei Darussalam as the host country, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia,
Singapore and Thailand attended the "Second Task Force Meeting On The
Establishment Of Monitoring Networks of Tsunami Early Warning Systems
inAsean", being held at the International Convention Centre in Berakas
from 4th to 5th April.
The Technical Task Force for the
Establishment of Monitoring Networks of the Tsunami Early Warning
System in Asean was formed and tasked to look into the issues of
tsunami data and information exchange arrangements, including means of
communications, data format and testing arrangements.
Among the issues discussed in the
meeting were means of data exchange such as Short Messaging System (SMS),
Global Telecommunications, e-mail, fax, Internet and telephone.
Training and capacity building needs on disaster management, tsunami
modelling, seismological training, data exchange software, on-the-job
training and risk management were also discussed.
The two-day meeting was also attended
by representatives from the Asean Secretariat and the World
Meteorological Organisation as well as delegates from the fields of
meteorology, seismology and sea-level monitoring. --
