Prince Hands Over Flag To Brunei
Team For Islamic Games

Begawan - It was another milestone in the development of sport
in Brunei as a total of 48 athletes and officials will be competing
against 57 Islamic countries in the 1st Islamic Solidarity Games to be
held in Saudi Arabia from April 8 to 20.
Yesterday morning saw the handing
over of the national flag by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri
Bolkiah, the President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic
Council to Awang Haji Japar bin Bangkol, the Chef-De-Mission of the
Brunei contingent, at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
His Royal Highness highlighted the
high hopes that each Bruneian placed on the contingent, in proving
themselves to compete and work hard towards success of sport
excellence to raise the image and moral of Brunei in the regional and
international sport arena.
He also hoped that by instilling a
winning spirit in each athlete, the athletes will work hard to compete
and overcome his or her opponents in the name of national pride.
HRH Prince Haji Sufri also outlined
some of the objectives of competing in the Solidarity Games which are
to strengthen understanding among Muslims countries especially among
youth of members countries in expanding the Islam identity in the
sport arena as well as to reinforce the ties and friendship among
youths of OIC member countries.
Meanwhile, the Pehin Dato Seri Paduka
(Dr.) Haji Awang Hussain, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, said
that the selection of athletes to the games is based on the high
capabilities and commitment of each athlete to compete.
He also hoped that the athletes will
make good use of the competition to not only strengthen understanding
among Islamic countries but also show their abilities in the
international sport arena.
The 1st Islamic Solidarity Games is
the largest international sporting event organised by the Organisation
of the Islamic Conference OIC).
Brunei will be competing in five
events: fencing, tennis, taekwando, karate and athletics. --
