UBD launches academic book
By Maya Salleh & James Kon
Local and expatriate lecturers of
Universiti Brunei Darussalam were called to avoid the dissemination of
false propaganda rooted from unfounded sources that can threaten
harmony and give rise to doubts, with the objective of venting out
their frustrations.
They were however urged to prove
their ability and expertise in preserving and helping societal
development by promoting the universiti as a renowned institution.
This call was made by Dr. Haji Ismail
bin Haji Duraman, Vice Chancellor of University Brunei Darussalam, at
the launch of "Brunei Malay Dialect in the Ancient Malay Language
Genealogy" (Dialek Melayu Brunei Dalam Salasilah Bahasa Melayu Purba),
written by Dr. Awang Haji Jaludin bin Haji Chuchu, Senior Lecturer of
the Department of Malay Language and Linguistic.
The book launched at the Green Room
of UBD yesterday was attended by officers and lecturers as well as
invited guests.
The Vice Chancellor commended the
publication of the book noting that it was a positive development
hoped to contribute to society in addition to the line of work
produced especially by local academia and as part of educational
products by the University's academia.
The Vice Chancellor also believes the
book will become a reference source for the general public or
researchers in the linguistic field who wish to research the roots of
Brunei Malay dialect.
The book, published by the Universiti
Kebangsaan Malaysia, one of the renowned Universities in this region,
is considered to be an honour especially to the writer and
subsequently gives recognition to University Brunei Darussalam.
The Vice Chancellor said the
university publisher and other established foreign publishers would be
able to provide more opportunities to the local writers, especially
among UBD's academia, for their works to be published.
The Vice Chancellor urged expatriate
lecturers in UBD to translate their expertise into publications
together with transferring their knowledge in the lecture rooms.
In officiating the launch, the Vice
Chancellor dusted a few copies of the book with fragrant flowers (bunga
rampai).
