Kuala Belait - A 30-year-old Thai man, who remained in the country unlawfully after the expiry of his employment pass, was sentenced to eight months jail yesterday for overstaying in Brunei for eight years.

Somchai Wirunlaphan pleaded guilty to overstaying for 3,003 days (8 years, 2 months and 23 days) since February 7, 1995.

According to the Immigration Prosecutor, Reduan Hj Adnan, the defendant came to Brunei on February 12, 1993 for working as a labourer for San The (B) Sdn Bhd having a salary of $18.00 per day.

Within one and a half years, the defendant's employer lodged a report to the Immigration Department regarding the defendant who had deserted the company since July 1994.

Two days ago, acting on a public complaint, Immigration officers from Kuala Belait conducted a raid on an unnumbered house in Kg Tunggulian, Lumut.

He was arrested immediately on suspicion being an illegal immigrant when he failed to produce a valid pass. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
