Letters no longer safe|
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

A mail box subjected to vandalism and theft
Nothing is safe nowadays where even
postal boxes were also subjected to vandalism and theft. Such acts of
vandalism and theft of letters at buildings have worried shop-keepers,
office managers, staff, and dwellers at such locations.
Residents of Gadong commercial
buildings said such thefts and vandalism on their postal boxes could
be averted if their mails are directed to their offices instead of
being delivered to the postal boxes.
Unfortunately for them all offices,
shops and residents of a building share a postal box located at a
convenient spot on the ground floor. They were given one key each to
open the postal boxes but however some buildings saw their boxes
vandalised and letters taken away. Their letters are now open to the
prowling eyes of the public.
Some members of the public who
patronised the shops at the building also found their postal boxes as
convenient dumping grounds. "Our letters are no longer safe as
our postal box had been vandalised. We pooled together to purchase
another locked box but the same thing happened," said an office
manager located at a building in Gadong.
The residents added that their
unlocked postal box could have been scrutinised by interested people
as well as their competitors.
They added they did lose important
mail. The residents lamented that some of their mails had been opened
and left in the boxes after they could not find anything valuable
inside. Some dwellers said even personal letters were opened and
photographs taken away.
The residents agreed that the matter
could be solved amicably if their post was delivered directly to their
offices. They added such acts would also provide employment as well as
make them have a good night's sleep thinking their letters would
arrive safely to them.
