"Once a scout, always a
scout." This was what a prominent scout leader said to his
scouts. Mr Gene B. Christy, the Ambassador of the United States of
America to Brunei visited the Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association's
Headquarters in Beribi yesterday afternoon.
Present to welcome the arrival of the
ambassador was by Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Raja Dato Seri Paduka Hj Awg
Mohd Ali bin Hj Awg Mohd Daud, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs
in his capacity as the President of the Brunei Darussalam Scouts
Association. Also present during yesterday's visit were Hj Zainal Hj
Ibrahim, the Chief National Commissioner of the Brunei Darussalam
Scouts Association as well as other commissioners of scouts.
The ambassador, himself a scout,
wanted to have a closer look of the scouts movement in the Sultanate
and to get in touch with the local scouts scene. He was given a
demonstration on the setting up of a camping tent and flagpole at the
5th floor of the Scouts' Headquarters.
Mr Gene B. Christy then moved to the
4th floor to view some of the exhibition on the Brunei Darussalam
Scouts Association's activities and later on moved to the VIP lounge
for a light meal.
Yesterday was also some sort of a
reunion for Mr Christy as he attended the 1963 World Scout Jamboree in
Greece in which Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association also sent a few
of their scouts to that international scouts gathering. Among the
scouts that attended the gathering were Pehin Dato Hj Awang Mohd Ali
and Awg Hj Abu Bakar.
The ambassador then signed the guest
book and was presented some souvenirs from the Brunei Darussalam
Scouts Association as a token of appreciation as this is the first
time that the Scouts Headquarters received a visit from a foreign
ambassador.
