Thinking Game'

Team leader Azura bte Hidup and the SAS team receiving the ICT Hoe
from Thinking Game founder Merlin Kong
The second 'ICT Thinking Game' held
at St George's School on April 25 saw St Angela's School successfully
defending their title as the 'smartest school', thus retaining the ICT
Hoe for another year. The victorious team - made up of members Azura
bte Hidup, Giegel Ignacio, Wong Siew Chee and Rachel Martin - were
respectively followed by their peers from St George's School, St
John's School and St Michael's School.
The theme for this year's contest was
'The Human Genome Project: What are the Ethics of Funding It?' In
addition to learning about human genetics from firsthand research
findings published in the Internet, contestants also had to consider
the ethical implications of funding the Human Genome Project from
various perspectives of a lawyer, doctor, insurance company and a
member of a couple with a history of mental disability.
The participating students were also
required to engage their newly acquired knowledge by publishing their
findings on a web site, mailing a letter to an agency involved in the
Human Genome Project and having their conclusions tested in a public
defence by university faculty.
During the award ceremony, judges
Prof Ken Clements, Dr Zohrah bte Hj Sulaiman and Dr Alan Chamberlain
remarked on the rigueur of the contest project and the high standard
attained by the participating students in tackling big issues
questions such as funding for the Human Genome Project.
Interestingly, as noted by teachers
Rodman Tan and Shyamala Premaratne from St John's School, April 25
marked the 50th anniversary of the discovery of DNA by Watson and
Crick.
