The Australian and the New Zealander
community in the Sultanate gathered at the Australian High
Commissioner's Residence in the early hours of the day, yesterday. It
was the day whereby each year, Australians and New Zealanders would
gather to honour the men and women from the Army Corps of both
countries, particularly the World War I units which landed at
Gallipoli on the Turkish Peninsula April 25, 1915, where many lives
were lost.
In an interview with the Australia
High Commissioner, Mr Allaster Cox about the Anzac Day, he explained
that the war had caused about 8000 soldiers killed by the end of that
year.
He further explained that every
Australian and New Zealander community throughout the world would
commemorate the Anzac day. Mr Cox added that in 1901, Australia was
united into a nation and that this war was their first war involvement
as a nation.
He further explained that they had
celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Anzac day in 2000, and that 3
of the troops who were still alive were present on that auspicious
ceremony. They celebrated the event at Gallipoli, Turkey.
