Danger Of Sars Infection Emphasised

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) can be contagious in many ways, a top Health Department official warned yesterday.

The Health Promotion and Education Division Department of Health Services, Dr Hajah Norhayati says the virus can be transmitted to those very closest to Sars patients. Doctor Hajah Norhayati also said Sars virus is transmitted through droplet or exposure to respiratory fluid by Sars patient. This indicates that close contact with Sars patient can be very contagious.

So far there are no vaccine to cure this disease. However, the Ministry of Health has prepared medication needed even if it's not entirely to cure Sars disease. Other alternative is to have a supportive treatment.

According to Dr Hajah Norhayati it is a supportive treatment like the antibiotic to cure germ diseases, which may occur like the Sars disease. Antiviral medicine like ribavarin, although is not specifically prescribed for Sars and steroids to reduce infection of the organs, which may be infected by Sars. Special equipments are also being prepared at hospitals and special health inspection conducted as well as supply of clothes and protective gear for the hospital staffs.
