Earth Day posters for schools

Handing over of Earth Day posters
In conjunction with Earth Day 2003,
US Ambassador to Negara Brunei Darussalam Mr Gene B. Christy paid a
courtesy call on the Acting Director of Schools, Dayang Apsha bte Haji
Abdul Majid. During his visit, Ambassador Christy presented Earth Day
posters to the acting director to be distributed to various schools in
the country.
Acting Director Dayang Apsah noted
that such celebrations are useful platforms for learning, as they not
only educate students on environmental conservation but also nurture
their interest in the sciences. Both agreed that the PRYNSA award in
connection with the World Forestry Day is an exemplary illustration of
this conviction.
This year, Earth Day was celebrated
in 185 countries by more than 5,000 organisations. Originally
conceived in 1970 to address environmental conditions in the US, its
success in affecting change was later considered by many as the model
for the creation of World Environment Day in 1972 by the United
Nations General Assembly. Both celebrations have chosen 'water' as
their conservation theme for 2003.
