‘No decline in Awg Semaun
Secondary School results'
By Azlan Othman
"The decline in the Form 3
results is not true. On the contrary, the performance of the students
in the PMB examination has improved over the years." This was
stated by the Principal of Awg Semaun Secondary school, Hj Metali in
responding to one of the Kg. Lumapas village resident's remark during
the dialogue session between Deputy Minister, Permanent Secretaries
and Directors under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Kg. Lumapas
village consultative council last Thursday.
The remark, which appeared in the
Borneo Bulletin on April 18, 2003 highlighted that the need to build a
bridge to connect Mukim Lumapas to the capital in order to further
shorten the journey from the usual 30 minutes.
One resident said, this matter was
raised several years ago but did not receive a positive response from
the government authority.
"One of the reasons for the drop
in Form 3 exam results at the school was that teachers did not want to
bring along students' class/homework books as teachers find it too
bulky to bring these books and cross the Brunei river via boats."
The principle added that claim that
teachers did not take back class/homework books was also baseless.
"Our teachers try to complete
whatever they can in the two or three afternoons when they are
expected to stay back after the normal school hours. They do take the
books home to complete their marking if necessary."
