The Journalist Society of PDS School
Secondary Section, led by its adviser Mr. Eric Lim, organised a
Photography and Writing Workshop at the famous Kampong Ayer in the
capital recently. The group activity allowed its members to hold,
focus and take snapshots of the uniquely structured stilt houses and
the docking water taxis of Kampung Ayer using their own set of
cameras.
The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque
also caught the attention of the young enthusiasts.
The secondary students eagerly took
snapshots of almost every interesting subject around the area.
While the young photographers were
busy with their lenses, the others searched for their own peaceful
corner where they could put into writing their thoughts and
impressions of the place. Some wrote about the majestic view of the
river while the others wrote stories on the boat people.
The young and aspiring journalists
were coached and assisted by Mr. Allan Landingin, Head of Advertising
& Publicity of PDS School and PDS International School. After an
hour and a half of hands-on training and personal coaching to the
young photographers, the photos turned out to be a surprise to all of
them.
Some of the shots looked as if they
were taken by a professional photographer, the students themselves
commented.
Izzati Bte Hj Hamdani, a secondary
school student, did not believe her accomplishment after seeing the
photos. She took a shot of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque which
looked like those featured in Brunei postcards.
The Journalist Society is planning
more activities before the end of this school term.
The active officers and members are
planning to organise a graphic design and newspaper lay-out seminar
cum workshop sometime in June this year.
After gaining sufficient training in
photography, writing and publication, the group plans to do a major
contribution to the publication and maintenance of the school's
newsletter and website.
