Local business body to celebrate silver jubilee

Despite the current world turmoil such as the aftermath of the Iraq war and the global outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) affecting the regional economies, the silver jubilee celebration of one of the oldest Malay business organisations in the country is set to go on. Persekutuan Peniaga-Peniaga Melayu Brunei (PPPMB), formed in 1978, is set to celebrate its 25 years in existence with various activities and events commencing this April 27.

The association would first hold an election on April 27 to select a new supreme committee that will lead the association into another five glorious years before the next election.

However, the current turmoil facing business communities in the region and the world over may complicate the tasks of the to-be-elected supreme committee in ensuring its member entrepreneurs a favourable business environment in the face of globalisation and trade liberalisation.

Yesterday was the last day for accepting nominations to the various posts in the executive committee, and members of General Meeting Committee were busy scrutinising and finalising all nominations.

The finalising, led by Hj Osman bin Hj Omar, Chairman of the General Meeting Committee, took place at the new office of PPPMB at No 16, 2nd Floor, Bangunan Desa Delima, Simpang 44, Kg Pancha Delima, Berakas.

He said all posts are up for grabs including president, deputy presidents, vice presidents, permanent chairman, secretary general, deputy secretary generals, treasurer general and its deputy, secretary and deputy secretary of national and international trade, secretary and deputy secretary of economy, secretary and deputy secretary of social welfare, and the executive committee members.

Acting Secretary General Pg Shahminan Pg Hj Ismail said the general meeting cum the election will take place April 27 at Sheraton Hotel in the capital at 1 pm.
