Heavy fine for violating Customs

Three Malaysian men and a Bruneian
were brought before the Magistrate's Court yesterday for an offence
under the Customs Act. Teo Tian Heng, a 53 year-old Malaysian, was
slapped with a fine totalling to $3,000 or in default 6 weeks
imprisonment after he pleaded guilty of having seven bottles of Andy
Player Special in his possession and ten packets of Rose Chicken Wing
and ten packets of Chicken Franks.
Another Malaysian, Law Boon Seng @
Mores Law, 45, was fined $700 or in default 3 weeks in jailed by
Magistrate Lailatul Zubaidah after he pleaded guilty to convey 12 cans
of Tiger Beer, a bottles of Gordon Dry Gin with a bottles of Bacardi
and 20 packets Rose Chicken Frank.
The other Malaysian man, Chiew Teck
Chin, 52, was fined $200 or in default a week imprisonment after he
pleaded guilty of having 20 kilogrammes of Danish Chicken Wing.
According to the Royal Customs and
Excise Department Prosecutor, both Teo Tian Heng and Law Boon Seng
were caught by a group of Customs Preventive Officers two days ago at
the vicinity of Terminal Pier in the capital upon their arrival from
Limbang.
As for Chiew Tech Chin, the same
officers apprehended him two days ago at the back lane of the shop at
Bandar Seri Begawan upon his arrival from Limbang.
The local man, Lee Sia Khim was fined
$1,000 or in default 5 months imprisonment. He was caught at his house
by the Customs Preventive Officers.
Before his arrest, the officer
stopped a car passenger who was seen from the accused house and upon
inspection the officers found the two bottles of contraband goods.
Investigations revealed that the
accused confessed sold the two bottles of the contraband goods to the
passenger, the Prosecutor said.
