Teachers Suffer Pinch As Schools
Face Squeeze

Bandar Seri
Begawan - With the economic recession affecting several
businesses in the country, retrenchment of staff and freezing
employees' salary have become major ways of minimizing company
costs.
This phenomenon has begun to affect
some Brunei teachers in private schools as well. "Teachers have
played an essential role in educating students in the country. They
are also a major factor in motivating their students on to greater
achievements," commented a worried parent.
Therefore their welfare should be
looked after or else students' scholastic results will be affected,
she added.
"I have suffered all this time.
I have not received my backdated salary, which is still delayed. We
have devoted ourselves to the school, yet our hard work is not
appreciated", one annoyed teacher who wishes to remain anonymous,
said.
Another teacher claimed that a
private school sacked her without notice and worse she has yet to
receive a penny. "This has burdened me as I have to meet my
expenses and I still have a loan to settle with the bank".
"I am seeking another job now
but times are hard. We did not receive our salary for a few months and
most of the teachers in this private school have had their salaries
frozen," added this former teacher.
She told the Bulletin that despite
the school freezing their salaries, the school authorities could still
afford to carry out renovation works of their premises and this matter
is a painful puzzle for her and her colleagues. (Courtesy
