Caught: Five Muslims Over
The Border For A Beer
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Luck has run out for those thirsty Muslims who
habitually nip over the border for a "quickie."
Persistent vigilance by relevant
authorities helped net at least half a dozen errant Muslims who
crossed the borders in search of alcoholic drinks in Sarawak.
Five Muslims who crossed the border
near Kuala Lurah control post to Limbang Thursday night to allegedly consume
alcohol were caught red handed.
Religious enforcement officers nabbed
them in an operation called Operation Aroma (Operasi Semerbak)
conducted on the fourth consecutive night, this week.
They will face charges under the
Kadhi Court (Ammendment 2001) laws. Officers form the Syariah Affairs
Department detected them following a breath analysis to determine
alcohol levels.
The operation codenamed 'Operasi
Semerbak 4' involving 17 officers was carried-out jointly with the
Limau Manis police, led by Inspector Pg. Hj Damit.
The police also caught Muslims who
brought-in alcoholic drinks into the country. The two and a half hour
operation ended at around 10 pm at time when the immigration control
post is closed to public. Those who crossed the border either by car
or by foot were being checked during the operations.
Apart from detecting Muslims who
crossed the border for a drink, the operation was also targeted on
errant drivers who broke traffic offences. The police imposed four
drivers with traffic compound fines.
Police are carrying out a relentless
campaign to deal against motorists who drive under the influence of
liquor. These errant motorists are a potential danger not only to
other drivers, passengers but also to other road users, the police
pointed out. (Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin)
