International English testing
system
By Azaraimy HH
If you need to be able to demonstrate
your command of English for further study, job applications or
immigration purposes there is a system called IELTS to help you. IELTS
will also help if you have doubts about your level of English, and
need to identify where to improve your skills. IELTS stands for
International English Language Testing System developed by the
University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) and
administered jointly throughout the world by The British Council and
IDP Education Australia.
The IELTS test covers listening,
speaking, reading and writing skills and grades candidates in a range
of abilities from Band 1, Non User, up to Band 9, Expert User. The
results identify which areas are your strengths and which are your
weaknesses.
Students wanting to study overseas in
Australia, UK, Canada or the USA will normally be required by
universities to sit the test and achieve a level Band score of 5.5 or
above.
Here in Brunei the IELTS tests are
available through IDP Education Australia and the British Council. IDP
holds tests twice a month in Gadong and Kuala Belait. If you feel
confident, you can take the test by simply registering beforehand and
coming along on the day. If, however, you feel you may need help
before sitting the exam, CfBT conducts preparation courses both in BSB
and Kuala Belait.
For those who feel confident but
would like to know what to expect in the test, a preparation and
self-testing pack is available from IDP for B$$30.
If you would like more information on
IELTS or on studying in Australia please contact Collette Foster or
