Do roadside billboards increase
risks?
The increasing numbers of roadside
billboard adverts are designed specifically to draw on the attention
of passing motorists and is that a major problem for drivers? Will it
significantly increase the risk of the drivers?
Advertising improves business.
Advertising creates awareness and distributes information. The
roadside billboard adverts are obviously a source of income for those
who own them. The question now is, is it a case of the income motive
outweighing the need to really make our roads safer?
Drivers cannot ignore roadside
billboards. Outdoors' sheer physical size allows for eye stopping,
bigger-than-life illustrations.
Do you drivers think that roadside
billboards are designed and built for the specific purpose of
distracting the attention of motorists?
May be the authorities concerned have
done a thorough investigation on the feasibility of the placing of
these billboards and to limit them to areas
where they do not add to the many
hazards with which road users already have to contend.
Advertising using giant billboard is
nothing new in fact as cities and towns become commercialised.
Proper placing of these billboards
will not just help generate business but much thought should be put
onto it so that appropriate signage could also have the advantage in
beautifying our capital and of course with road safety as prime
consideration.
The dictionary defines accident as
"an unexpected and undesirable event, a mishap unforeseen and
without apparent cause."
Strictly speaking, most accidents are
not accidents at all, they are collisions that could and should have
been avoided. Hence drivers ought to be cautious when driving passes
those roadside billboards.
