Sabah studies Labuan bridge
proposal
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Road travellers from Brunei
Darussalam may drive all the way to Labuan when the bridge linking
Menumbok in Sabah and Labuan of Federal Territory is ready. The plan
to build such bridge is still being studied by the Sabah government,
stated the Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman as quoted by the
Malaysian Berita Harian.
The proposed bridge will be about 14
kilometres, and will be crossing part of the South China Sea. At
present, Brunei road travellers needed to board ferry to take their
vehicles from Menumbok to Labuan.
Labuan is only about 45 minutes by
boat from Serasa, Muara. However, there is no ferry that can
accommodate vehicles to Labuan at present, even though there had been
a few proposals pertaining to such introduction.
The construction of the bridge is
expected to cost about B$250 million, but the economic impact would be
greater for both Labuan and Sabah.
If the project materialises, then
Temburong may benefit if a 26-kilometre bridge linking the district to
the Brunei Muara District can also be constructed.
Awg Metusin bin Orang Kaya Sura Hj
Tuba, one of the committee members responsible towards the preparation
of working papers for such project said earlier that the people of
Temburong welcomed the proposal towards a direct road link to their
district.
