Students eagerly playing the "Ajung' game

Trying out the 'Congkak' game
Education for students is not limited
to the school compound as they are most likely to learn more on
educational visits.
Brunei Museum welcomed around 20
students from Sekolah Rendah Pintu Malim along with two teachers, led
by Cikgu Dayang Azimah binti Mohd Noor during a field trip to the
department.
During the visit, the students were
exposed to the traditional games of Brunei Darussalam by the
Ethnography Department of the museum such as 'Congkak' and 'Ajung'.
The game of 'Congkak' is usually
played during marriage ceremonies or any other traditional festive
occasions. This game requires a team of two players. Traditionally,
the 'Congkak' is in the form of a wooden ship with rows of pockets,
but nowadays it can be found in a sophisticated style made of plastic
and is available in department stores.
However, the game of 'Ajung' requires
more groups of people to play. The game comprises of two teams where
each team has their own 'miniature ball'. The two teams choose their
team leaders and the opposing team is expected to guess which member
has the hidden ball. The team that manages to figure out where the
miniature ball is will then move to another 'hidden' position. The
team that manages to move the most to another area is considered the
winner.
A briefing on the Museum Department
as well as a tour to the Museum library was also part of the programme
during the visit.
