Drug Offender Should Be Given Longer Term, Judge Says
By Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - Judge Dato Steven Chong dismissed the appeal by Teruna Dewali bin Yusof, a repeat Narcotics offender against an earlier three-month jail sentence and said he should have been given a longer prison term.

Teruna was sent to jail on being convicted on two counts of consumption of controlled drugs. The High Court ruled that Teruna's appeal had 'no merit'.

Judge Dato Chong took into account that Teruna was convicted in 1992 and 1995 for three similar offences. The court noted therefore the law provided for a minimum sentence of three years jail for a second or subsequent offence.

In the case of a second or subsequent offence the sentence should be at least four years jail.

"In the circumstances, the sentences imposed erred on the side of leniency," concluded the judge. (Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin)
