Aroma Watch Sniffs Out Muslim
Drinkers
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Muslims in Brunei who slip over the border into
Sarawak for that forbidden quick evening drink better watch out. These
sundowners could be in for a shock because they may be sniffed out as
their "aroma" could give them away.
For the second night in succession
the Police and the Religious Enforcement Officers have mounted the
"Operasi Semerbak" (Operation Aroma) to smell out Muslim
tipplers.
And thirteen men from the Limau Manis
police station in cooperation with the Religious Officers of the
Syariah Affairs Department conducted a second operation in their night
time border watch.
In the operation codenamed "Operasi
Semerbak 2", held on Tuesday night at the Kuala Lurah Control
Post, a Chinese man was detained for bringing in 12 cans of beer
without passing through the control post.
The police also compounded drivers
with fines for violating the road traffic rules. Five drivers were
fined, including two for driving without any license. The team was led
by Inspector Pg Hj Damit and Sergeant Major Hj Bakri.
It is leaarnt that the operation was
called "Semerbak" because it aimed to analyse the breath of
Muslims who cross the border to drink alcohol, which is an offence
under Chapter 77 of the Kadhi Court Act (Amendment 2001). (Courtesy
