Local Man's Drug Appeal Dismissed

Bandar Seri Begawan - Judge Dato Paduka Steven Chong in the High Court yesterday dismissed a 29-year-old local man's appeal against his four and a half years' jail term for a drug offence.

Masdeni Mahmud, pleaded guilty to one count of consumption of Methylamphetamine, a Class A controlled drug previously before a magistrate. He committed the offence two years ago.

Masdeni had four prior convictions for similar offences in 1992, 1994 and 1998. He was sentenced to three years' jail in 1994 and three and a half years in 1998.

Also, on April 12 2001, he was convicted of another Section 6(b) offence and a sentence of four years jail was imposed.

Judge Steven Chong said looking at the appellant's record of drug abuse, he did not consider the sentence imposed to be excessive and dismissed the appeal. (Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin)
