German fined for naming baby after Osama bin Laden

Berlin - A German man has been fined £600 for naming his son Osama bin Laden.

Mehmet Cengiz, from Cologne, gave the name to his new-born son in the autumn of 2002.

Initially, the name was accepted and the baby received health insurance documents bearing the name, the Express newspaper writes.

But a court eventually ruled the child had to be given a different name and he is now officially called Haci Bekir.

The local attorney general decided to file charges against Cengiz and Cologne district court has now ordered the father to pay a £600 fine.

Judge Alfred Klimmer ruled the name was given as a way of condoning terrorism. -- Annanova News
