Brunei Muara District Tops In PC
But Belait Leads In Internet
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Brunei Muara district topped the ownership of
personal computers while the Belait district had the most people who
were connected to the Internet, the 2001 population and housing census
revealed.
The census, which was highlighted in
the latest issue of the Brunei Economic Bulletin, included questions
on the ownership of personal computers by private households. The
results showed that out of 53,928 private households, 46.6 per cent
owned at least one PC.
This meant that nearly every other
private household in Brunei owned a PC. This aggregate data however,
masks a considerable difference in the ownership of PCs by census
district.
The proportion of PC ownership was
highest in the Brunei/Muara district, with slightly over half (50.8
per cent) of the total private households owning a PC, while the
lowest was in Temburong (25.5 per cent). Almost half (47.5 per cent)
of the total private households owned a PC in Belait, 38.4 Per cent in
Tutong and 34.4 per cent in Bandar Seri Begawan.
With regard to the Internet access,
some 61.9 per cent of the private households in Brunei were connected
to the Internet. The proportion was slightly higher than the national
average in two of the census districts with Belait at 68.5 per cent
and Bandar Seri Begawan at 65.5 per cent.
The Brunei Muara district recorded
61.4 per cent being connected to the Internet, while in Tutong
slightly more than half (51.9 per cent) of the private households had
access to the Internet. In Temburong only 40.9 per cent were
connected. (Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin)
