A delegation from Badan
Kebajikan Wanita Perumahan Lambak Kanan (BAKANITA) paid a
visit to the Youth Development Centre over the weekend.
Led by BAKANITA's Deputy Chairlady Hajah Fatimah OKSU Haji
Busah, and Secretary Dyg Hjh Rosnah Haji Sidis, the trip
aimed to provide a closer look at activities conducted at
the Centre.
The 30-member group were
later briefed by Awg Ismail bin Bahari - Assistant Head of
Youth and Sports Officer - on the history, role and
responsibilities of the Centre.
Awg Ismail said before
the establishment of the centre, a pilot project under the
Youth & Sports Department known as the 'Youth
Development and Training Scheme' was held from 1992 to
1995 at the Youth Centre in the capital.
In May 1996, the scheme
was changed to 'Youth Development Programme' and the
administration was transferred to the Ministry of Culture,
Youth & Sports. Later, by June 2, 1996, it was
transferred to the building located in Jalan Muara.
He said the Centre aimed
towards turning youths into responsible, disciplined,
dynamic and independent adults, in addition to preparing
them for employment. With the first intake in 1996, the
Centre conducted five types of courses namely; computer
and office management, cookery and catering, pastries and
cake, grooming and hairstyling, and lastly basic sawing.
Offering various types of
courses from Technical schools in the country, the Centre
mainly focuses on self- development programmes as well as
skill training programmes.
The mission of the centre
was to act as the responsible body, to educate the youths
for the development of the country.
According to the
statistic from 1996 - 2001, a total of 464 people have
undertaken courses at the Centre, of which 108 were male
(23%) and 356 were female (77%). The Centre is open to
citizen and permanent resident of the country who are
18-years and above.
After the briefing, the
group toured the workshop and had the opportunity to
mingle with some of the course participants.
