By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awg Hj Yahya bin Hj Ibrahim was uncontested when he once again won nomination to lead the Brunei Historical Society into another bright future.

The post of Deputy President of the society went to Prof Madya Dr Hj Hashim bin Hj Abd Hamid, who was the society's former Honorary Secretary.

The election of new committee members was made during the society's annual general meeting held at the Pusat Da'awah Islamiah in Berakas yesterday morning. About 50 members attended the meeting.

The new Honorary Secretary for the society is Dr Hj Latif bin Hj Ibrahim, while Dr Hj Muhammad Hadi bin Abdullah is the new Deputy Honorary Secretary.

Pg Dato Paduka Hj Ahmad bin Pg Mohd Yusof continued to be the Honorary Treasurer, a position which he had held ever since the society was established in 1982, while Pg Dr Hj Karim bin Pg Othman was elected as the society's Honorary Writer.

Another six people were also elected as the society's committee members.

In his address, Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awg Hj Yahya said that the society will be reactivated to pursue its objectives in historical preservation, researches and visits in the Malay Archipelago, especially to places with royal links with Brunei Darussalam such as Sarawak, Sabah, Sambas, Pontianak and Banjarmasin.

"This is in line with the written objectives such as the generation of interest in history, culture and the traditions of the population of this country and its neighbours, as well as any countries with historical links with Brunei Darussalam," Pehin Hj Yahya said.

"Another objective is to encourage the preservation of artefacts, old buildings and areas of historical significance in this country and other places with historical links with Brunei Darussalam.

"Thus it is our plan to reactivate historical researches and the archiving of historical data, folk tales, traditions, language and the customs of the population of this country," he said.

He added that the society is also planning to hold the 2nd Historical Seminar in the near future.

The first seminar was held in conjunction with its first AGM which was declared open by Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, May 27, 1984.

The society's first president was Pg Setia Negara Pg Hj Mohd Yusof bin Pg Hj Abd Rahim, a former Director of Brunei Press Sdn Bhd.

The society has about 150 members, including state dignitaries and historical figures.
