Bandar Seri Begawan - The Immigration and National Registration Department says it has expelled 1,584 foreigners in the sultanate last year.

Immigration Department statistics showed 94 foreigners overstayed and were sent back to their homeland, from January to March this year.

Meanwhile compound fines for immigration offences from the year 2000 to March this year was $1,187,800.

Immigration Department Director Awang Sabali stated this during a briefing with the visiting penghulus, kampong and longhouse ketuas in the Temburong District yesterday.

During the visit, the village heads were also briefed on the function, responsibilities and duties of the department.

Awang Sabali added that among the objectives of the department was to provide efficient and effective service to their clients to prevent entry of undesirable foreign nationals or those who contravened the immigration laws.

The department also aimed to maintain close relations to help with the duties of the kampong leaders.

He also called on them to report any suspicious immigration violations to the department.

He also told them to remind their residents to apply for the Smart Cards when their children reached 12 years of age.

The visit to the Immigration Department was part of the village elders call on government departments.
