Public still sceptical over SARS
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Concerned members of the public once
again hoped for maximum precautions to be imposed at all entry points
especially the Brunei International Airport to safeguard this nation
from the devastating effects of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
They said even though the nation is still free from SARS, measures
need to be intensified against the possible spread of the virus here
which has killed hundreds and affected thousands more worldwide.
Aircraft passengers and flight
attendants must be made to wear protective masks at aircrafts because
of the length of time they spent inside a closed compartment.
Similarly airport staff including
immigration and customs officials should do the same as they are
vulnerable to the atypical pneumonia which may be brought in by
travellers from SARS hotspots.
"All embarking and disembarking
passengers must be screened for SARS such as in Singapore and Kuala
Lumpur where travellers needed to pass through SARS detection machines
to ensure they are SARS-free.
"All aircrafts must undergo a
special cleaning and disinfecting process overseen by the local
airport authorities before the aircraft is boarded again.
"The process involves cleaning
all hard surfaces accessible to passengers, including armrests, tray
tables, side panels, overhead bins and toilets, with an
aircraft-specific disinfectant recommended by the World Health
Organisation (WHO)," they said.
