More than $8 million for Serasa
beach protection
More than $8.15 million has been
allocated for the Phase Two Serasa Beach Protection Project, which
will be implemented on November 28 later this year, RTB reported. The
man-made beach of Serasa controls siltation, by diverting the flow of
sediments from entering into estuary, of the Muara Port area.
The 1.6-kilometre beach is popular to
visitors for its recreation and water sports, especially during the
weekend. There is also a Water Sport Complex, Yacht Club and the
Jetsky Sport.
However, the beach has been
experiencing erosion problems for years.
In 1978, the beach had a width of
eighty metres, which is now only thirty-five.
With the commencement of the project,
the beach would still be opened to visitors as works will be done in
stages.
Unfortunately, some parts of the
beach have been closed from last March 13 to house facilities for the
project, including heavy vehicles.
The project is conducted by the
Drainage and Sewerage Department of the Public Work Department and
expected to be completed by July 27, 2004.
Upon completion, it is hoped that the
beach will become a bigger area in order for recreation to be
implemented.
