Brunei Shell Tanker's (BST) Engineering Cadet Ak Nor Hazman bin Pg Hj Abd Hamid has been nominated as Warsash Maritime Centre's (WMC) Best Engineer Cadet NVQ Portfolio, according to a press release issued by BSP.

The press release said for his outstanding performance as the best among a batch of 36 other Engineering Cadets, the BST-sponsored Bruneian who hails from Kampung Serasa Muara will be honoured at the Marine Society Awards to be held in London on 4 June 2003.

Ak Nor Hazman, 22, has produced an excellent portfolio for his final college phase at WMC where he will graduate in August with a NVQ3 qualification. He will join the graduation ceremony in Brunei in September.

He was offered an Engineering Cadet sponsorship by BST in May 2000 for 3 years to earn the NVQ3 or the National Vocational Qualification Level 3 as an Engineer Cadet. This young Bruneian is among the first school-leavers to qualify for this sponsorship programme.

The NVQ is the work related equivalent to either the GNVQ or the new Vocational Certificate in Education that is a highly recognised qualification in United Kingdom and around the world.

Ak Nor Hazman did both his O levels and A levels at the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, one of the most prestigious secondary educational institution in Brunei attended by those who excelled in their PCE.

He has come a long way to become the latest product of BST's Bruneianisation programme under which the BSP joint-venture company hopes to see its ships sailing fully crewed by Bruneians.

With the excellent academic performance, he is all set to take to the high seas and hone his competence at becoming a full-fledged engineer in charge of running ocean-going vessels.

As ship engineer, he will hold various responsibilities that cover engine operations, repairs and servicing including electrical maintenance and certain work involving chemical analysis.

The Warsash Maritime Centre (WMC) where Ak Nor Hazman had studied for the past three years offers a full Engineering Cadet programme leading to NVQ Level 3, which will allow cadets to undergo further qualifying training with shipping companies on the high seas to ultimately become Chief Engineer Officers.

He and other cadets at WMC undergo their training according to an academic and workshop syllabus that covers a range of technical and management topics that also includes practical skills.
