Around 35 students from the
Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri, were given an opportunity
to master the skills of decorating and making cakes at the
Orchid Garden Hotel yesterday afternoon.
The students comprising mostly
form 5 students from history, food and nutrition, and home
science classes were lead by their teachers, Norzanah binti Haji
Yaakub and Pg Rokiah binti Pg Haji Tajuddin.
The making of a fresh fruit
cake and chocolate cake was showcased to the students by two
pastry chefs, Cu Cu Aminah and Joelralie, and observed by Nusrul,
the executive SUOS Chef of Orchid Garden Hotel.
As the demonstration went on,
students asked questions like how long can cakes last and what
ingredients are best used and where to get them.
One of the students, Dayang
Iwani said that she was able to learn how to cook and decorate
cakes. She said that she had a lot of fun and the trip has
increased her knowledge on how a hotel kitchen operates.
Norzanah binti Haji Yaakub said
that the trip gave the students exposure and guidance for them
to think about a career in the hospitality industry. In terms of
history, it served as a way to take a closer look at the Brunei
economy in comparison from past to present.

Tuah, the chairperson of Orchid Garden Hotel with the Assistant
General Manager Shamsul Bahrin and front office managers Mohd
Iswandi and Maria Han were on hand to show the students around
the hotel and answer any questions about the operation of the
hotel.
