Around 35 students from the Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri, were given an opportunity to master the skills of decorating and making cakes at the Orchid Garden Hotel yesterday afternoon.

The students comprising mostly form 5 students from history, food and nutrition, and home science classes were lead by their teachers, Norzanah binti Haji Yaakub and Pg Rokiah binti Pg Haji Tajuddin.

The making of a fresh fruit cake and chocolate cake was showcased to the students by two pastry chefs, Cu Cu Aminah and Joelralie, and observed by Nusrul, the executive SUOS Chef of Orchid Garden Hotel.

As the demonstration went on, students asked questions like how long can cakes last and what ingredients are best used and where to get them.

One of the students, Dayang Iwani said that she was able to learn how to cook and decorate cakes. She said that she had a lot of fun and the trip has increased her knowledge on how a hotel kitchen operates.

Norzanah binti Haji Yaakub said that the trip gave the students exposure and guidance for them to think about a career in the hospitality industry. In terms of history, it served as a way to take a closer look at the Brunei economy in comparison from past to present.

Datin Hajah Masnah Binti Haji Tuah, the chairperson of Orchid Garden Hotel with the Assistant General Manager Shamsul Bahrin and front office managers Mohd Iswandi and Maria Han were on hand to show the students around the hotel and answer any questions about the operation of the hotel.
