In what will hopefully be the
start of a continuous programme of outreach activities to
schools spearheaded by the Brunei Museum, students from SMJA
Secondary School were taught the basic principles of material
casting, a technique used to construct life-like replicas of
animals and plants.
The workshop was held yesterday
at the Museum Discovery Hall at the Brunei Museum, Kota Batu.
The casting techniques were taught by Awg Abdullah bin Hj Wahab,
Museum Officer.
Accompanied by their teachers,
about 20 students grasped the basic technique of gypsum-based
casting to make an exact replica of fruits taken fresh from the
market in a half-day workshop. Casting materials were sponsored
by the Brunei Museum.
The students were apparently
quite keen to learn more on this particular type of casting
technique, which is also currently employed for reconstructing
museum collectibles. It is a good craft technique that,
according to the teachers, the students can use for their
'O'-Level projects.
The teacher, Cikgu Zakaria bin
Omar who is also one of the national artists said that the
programme and activities such as this is certainly valuable to
students, and that co-operation between the Museum and schools
are welcome.
He also gave his thanks to the
Brunei Museum for initiating such programmes.
Any schools interested in
workshops such as casting or any other involving the museum may
contact the Museum Education Service Unit at 2223241.
