Flood Prone Areas Focused As Key
Drains Widened
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The widening of a drainage system in some areas in
flood prone Mukim Kilanas is progressing well, a Public Works
Department spokesman said.
The project carried out by a private
contractor and monitored by the Public Works Department is aimed at
preventing flooding in the areas.
The widening and deepening of the
river in Kampong Kilanas are part of the efforts to prevent flooding
in low-lying areas during heavy rain.
It is hoped that the 26-metre wide
river will be able the channel excessive volume of water into the main
river.
The project along the 1,400 metre
long Sengkurong River will inter-connect with the Damuan River.
Besides the widening and deepening of
the riverbank, the project will also reinforce the embankment from
soil erosion by erecting a retaining wall.
The project, which started in
September 2001 is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
It cost over $774,000.
The project also included the
widening of interconnecting river into six metres, nine metres and 40
metres as well as clearing drains.
The drains will be cleared of debris
once or every two weeks as a measure to prevent them from blockage.
Maintenance will also be carried out
continuously to main entrances to homes in the project area.
