Amidst the raging war in Iraq
and the fear of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in
affected areas such as Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Vietnam,
the tourism industry here is set to receive a timely boost with
the help of the Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL)
XII conference held here next month.
The internationally rated
event, organised by the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei
Darussalam (DBP), is scheduled to take place at the
International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas from May 4-8.
Yesterday morning, the DBP
Director Hj Abdul Hakim bin Hj Mohd Yassin organised a briefing
session with event sponsors at a function held at the Dewan
Sarmayuda, DBP building in Berakas.
In his address, Hj Abdul Hakim
recorded his highest appreciation and thanks to sponsors of the
event - all from the private sector.
He added that by sponsoring the
international event, the sponsors are contributing to the
development of knowledge in this country.
In the past, the private sector
had played major roles in promoting language and literature in
this country such as the Bahana Creative Award, the Juara and
Mekar award and the Brunei Darussalam Mastera Literature Award,
which was introduced for the first time this year.
HSBC Bank would be the main
sponsor of the event which would also be co-sponsored by Sri
Kandi Restaurant, T.A Morgan, DSTCom Sdn Bhd, Bank IDBB,
Syarikat Adinin Works & Engineering Sdn Bhd, Cityneon Sdn

The CONSAL X11 conference,
entitled "Information Resources Empowerment: Enhancing
Knowledge Heritage" is co-organised by the Brunei
Darussalam Library Association and would be supported by the
CONSAL Secretariat, Singapore and Ministry of Culture Youth and
Sports, Brunei Darussalam.
Participants for the event are
expected to come from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN) economies as well as from non-ASEAN region such as
Australia, New Zealand, UK and other countries.
The participants will comprise
librarians, knowledge managers, information and reading
specialists, information providers, professionals, academicians,
archivists, cultural experts, book vendors, researchers and
government officials as well as interested members of the local
population.
In conjunction with CONSAL XII,
two side events would also be held, the International Book Fair
2003 And an IT Exhibition at the ICC.
